Yichieng was born on 21 November 1985. Chieng is currently a senior reporter on
The Daily Show on Comedy Central and creator and star of the sitcom Ronny
Chieng International Student which began airing on ABC (Australia) and Comedy
Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to a Malaysian
Chinese family. From 1989 until 1994, he was living in Manchester in New
Hampshire. Chieng performed alongside Trevor Noah at a Melbourne comedy festival
in 2013. Two years later, he was asked to audition for the role of
correspondent on The Daily Show, which Noah hosts. He was named one the 10
Comics to watch by Variety in July 2016. In October 2016, Chieng appeared as a
guest on The Daily Show to respond to an interview with Jesse Watts on a Fox
News segment that many believed was racist. Chieng aired an expletive-laden
criticism of the conservative network's segment. He also visited New York
City's Chinatown in which Watters joked about residents. The viral video was
featured in Slate as well as the Washington Post. In his youth, Chieng was an
Singapore Sea Scout. Chieng hasn't managed to acquire citizenship or permanent
residence status in Australia despite having lived in Australia for ten years.
Chieng made an absurd joke about being intolerant of dogs on 2018's Daily Show.
However, he later stated that he's "100 100% not afraid of dogs" in
an interview.
